Pond and lagoon baffles: selection guide

Baffles belong inside the water body, where they influence the route liquid takes. A reliable design begins with hydraulics and operating access, not with a catalogue shape.
What is a baffle curtain?
A baffle curtain is a flexible barrier installed within a pond, lagoon, basin, or tank. It changes the flow path between inlet and outlet, creates process zones, or prevents a direct path that bypasses the intended treatment volume.
The curtain does not automatically treat the water. It is infrastructure that helps the selected process use the available volume more deliberately. Its effect depends on position, depth, permeability, anchoring, and the actual flow regime.
How baffle curtains work
- Redirect flow. A solid or partly open barrier makes water travel around, below, or through a planned route.
- Create zones. Curtains can divide one basin into operational sections without building a rigid wall.
- Control depth. The top and bottom detail determine whether flow passes over, under, or through the curtain.
- Respond to loading. Supports and restraint carry hydraulic forces while allowing required movement.
- Preserve access. Retrieval, inspection, cleaning, and nearby equipment are considered at design stage.

When to use baffles
Consider baffles when a hydraulic assessment identifies short-circuiting, when a process requires staged zones, or when a retrofit needs an internal barrier without a permanent civil wall. Tanks, ponds, and lagoons can all present suitable cases, but they impose different loads and access constraints.
Do not use a generic sketch as a final design. The project must confirm water levels, inflow and outflow, solids, chemistry, attachment points, wind and wave exposure, maintenance access, and the consequence of failure.
Baffle curtain vs floating cover
A baffle redirects water within the basin. A floating cover changes conditions at the water surface. Baffles do not inherently control evaporation or sunlight across the entire surface, while a surface cover does not automatically correct the internal hydraulic path.
