A pond liner is a continuous waterproofing membrane installed beneath the water; HDPE usually suits engineered, weldable containment, while EPDM suits smaller or irregular ponds that need a flexible sheet.

A pond liner seals the basin; it does not cover the water surface. Choosing one starts with containment duty, pond geometry, ground conditions, installation access, and the approvals attached to the water use.
What is a pond liner?
A pond liner is a continuous membrane placed across the prepared bed and banks of a pond to create a low-permeability barrier. The liner belongs below the water. A floating pond cover belongs at the surface, where it addresses sunlight, evaporation, debris, odour, or access by birds.
That separation matters during design. A project may need a liner, a surface cover, both systems, or neither. Treating them as substitutes can leave either leakage below the waterline or an unmanaged surface above it.
How pond liners work
- Prepared support. The subgrade is shaped, cleared of damaging objects, and assessed for settlement before membrane placement.
- Continuous barrier. Sheets are joined or seamed according to the selected material system so the bed and banks act as one containment layer.
- Protected transitions. Inlets, outlets, corners, penetrations, and the crest receive deliberate details rather than improvised folds.
- Controlled loading. Filling, water-level changes, and maintenance access are planned so the membrane is not pulled or punctured.
- Verified installation. The project specification defines the inspection and seam-testing regime appropriate to its risk and use.

These are functional descriptions, not a claim that every membrane suits every water body. Material grade, thickness, reinforcement, protection layers, and installation quality are project decisions.
When to use a pond liner
Consider a liner when the natural ground cannot meet the leakage objective, when stored water must be isolated from the soil, or when the project specification requires a manufactured containment barrier. Existing ponds may also need lining during reconstruction when leakage, erosion, or contaminated ground is being addressed.
For a small, irregular pond, an EPDM system may simplify forming around curves. For a large engineered basin with long straight runs and a controlled installation, HDPE may offer a more familiar welded-geomembrane route. The material comparison is only a starting point: a competent designer must confirm the complete lining system.
What about LLDPE and PVC liners?
LLDPE and PVC remain established geomembrane families, but they should not inherit the specification of either HDPE or EPDM. LLDPE is generally considered where greater flexibility than HDPE is useful while retaining a thermoplastic, weldable system. PVC can conform readily to detailed geometry, but plasticiser selection, chemical exposure, protection, seam method, and the intended service environment all require review.
For any of the four material families, compare the exact grade rather than the acronym alone. Thickness, reinforcement, UV exposure, chemical compatibility, subgrade preparation, protection layers, seam quality-control method, anchorage, and repair access belong in the project specification.
