How to measure pond evaporation rates

A defensible pond evaporation rate comes from a water balance that records level change alongside rainfall, inflow, draw-off, overflow, and leakage over a defined period.

Level loss is not automatically evaporation. The useful calculation accounts for every known route by which water entered or left during the same observation period.

What is a pond evaporation rate?

It is the depth or volume of water transferred from the pond surface to the atmosphere during a defined period. For an operating pond, it is usually inferred from a water balance rather than read directly from level change.

How to build the water balance

  • Record water level at a fixed reference and consistent time.
  • Record rainfall, pumped or natural inflow, and intentional draw-off.
  • Note overflow, cleaning, leaks, and unusual operating events.
  • Use the pond area appropriate to the observed level.
  • Compare periods with similar context before and after an intervention.
